Subject: First Amendment , Second Clause Date: Fri, 02 Apr 2004 15:30:27 -0500 To: The American Civil Liberties Union From: The American Civil Liberties Union Thank you for using The American Civil Liberties Union Mail= System Message sent to the following recipients: Senator Schumer Senator Clinton Message text follows: Bob Armstrong 42 Peck Slip #4B New York, NY 10038 April 2, 2004 [recipient address was inserted here] [recipient name was inserted here], As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2004 (S. 2056), which would allow the= government to levy large fines on broadcasts that the Federal Communications= Commission considers =93indecent.=94 This economic censorship would= dramatically infringe on the First Amendment and would hinder the diversity of= programming available to consumers. The Second Clause of the First Amendment says that freedom of= speech should never be abridged. This proposed legislation is= unconstitutional since it would dramatically hinder free speech by placing very= strong punishments on those people who violate what the government= censors consider =93indecent.=94 If you want to gut that clause even more than it already has been= , do it properly thru the constitutional amending process . Sincerely, Bob Armstrong ; Manhattan Libertarian Drug Affairs Director
