Back then these were separate brews from separate brewers - not= mega-merged like cars or media . Blatz was particularly flavorful ; I didn't= like it then , but think I would now . Miller's was alway watery light . Yet they are one of the= survivors . Like Coors -- which I am embarrassed to say I collaborated in= bringing back cases of from climbing trips to Colorado . My eyes were open to great beer at Paisano's in Madison - a stop= on the Sunday night way homeward fatigued from climbing . They had= Lowenbrau , both light , and this dark stuff(!) by the pitcher . And this= was years before they made a deal to be brewed locally "for the American= taste" . A few years later , at the Spaghetti Factory in Denver , SF's= Anchor Steam opened my awareness to the possibility of a great American beer= . Now , for me , the ultimate in relaxation is an imperial= Guinness and a maduro cigar . But back the to dark side : The worst beer is Chief Oshkosh . One weekend , we got an 8 pack for perhaps a buck thirty . We= could not finish it . Runner up ( down ? ) is Wiedemann's from around Cincy . They had= such great ads of a guy BBQing a steak - and the hand he was holding= it with - that I would break down and buy the stuff every once in a while= . Dishonorable mention to Frankenmuth and Schoenling . On the upside , I think one of the most underappreciated brews ,= whose uniqueness NYers are likely not to recognize is Ballantine Ale= . It has maintained its hoppy individualism through all the trials= of an independent brewer over the decades .
